Frequently asked questions

Orthodox Easter Sunday is on 5 May 2024. Good Friday is 3 May, Easter Monday is 6 May and Clean Monday, the start of Lent, is 18 March.

The Orthodox Church calculates Easter with the Julian calendar and the rule of the First Council of Nicaea: the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, and always after the Jewish Passover. Because the Julian calendar runs 13 days behind the Gregorian one, Orthodox Easter is usually one to five weeks later than Western Easter; in some years, such as 2025, the two coincide.
